Terry Wilson’s “Black Inventor” Poster
"I’ve been in advertising for over 20 years. As a Creative Director, I’ve developed campaigns for companies nationally and internationally with many successes. I’ve always wanted to use my advertising, design and communication abilities to inspire and educate.
The Black Inventor is an original piece of art created in assemblage and pencil. The central androgynous figure was developed primarily using portions of 12 out of the 300 inventions that also help to form the frame of the poster. The piece charts the name of the inventor, their discovery and the year in which their creations came to life. For example, the musical image that runs along the left edge of the poster celebrates the achievement of Robert Flemming, who, in 1886, invented a modern-day guitar.
What most people today fail to recognize is the great odds these African Americans struggled against; so this poster is a testament to their passion to succeed. It encourages us to know our past which has positivly effected our future. I hope this will educate and shine the light of ingenuity over the African American community and to those who want access to this mostly hidden knowledge."
